Bucktown residents are among the Chicago-area volunteers gathering to celebrate Wikipedia's 25th anniversary this weekend. The celebration, organized by the Wikimedians of Chicago User Group, takes place Saturday, February 1st from 1-4 p.m. at the nearby Hairpin Arts Center on Milwaukee Avenue, bringing together editors, writers, photographers and other Wikipedia contributors from across Chicago.

The event aims to rebuild and grow Chicago's community of Wikipedia editors after several years of pandemic-related dormancy. With nearly 200 people already registered, organizers are excited about the strong interest in connecting with fellow Wikipedia contributors in person. This year's celebration is expected to significantly outpace last year's event, which attracted about 30 attendees. "Since this is the 25th anniversary, we want to really emphasize the importance of Wikipedia and get across that this is really run by volunteers," says Wicker Park resident Kelly Mi, one of the event organizers. "Everybody is welcome, it doesn't matter how experienced you are." The celebration will include a commemorative cake and opportunities for both new and experienced editors to connect.

Bucktown residents interested in Chicago history, culture, or simply looking to contribute their knowledge to the world's largest online encyclopedia are encouraged to attend this free event. No prior editing experience is necessary – just bring curiosity and a passion for sharing information about our city with the world.
