Chicago Market Co-Op Secures Final Permits for Historic Uptown Grocery Opening

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

After a decade-long journey, Chicago Market has reached a significant milestone with the City of Chicago granting its construction permit, enabling the community-owned grocery co-op to begin buildout in the historic Gerber Building adjacent to the Wilson Red Line station in Uptown.

When completed, Chicago Market will be a vibrant, community-owned grocery store featuring local, sustainably farmed, organic produce, meat and dairy products, alongside all typical grocery staples. The space will include delicious prepared foods, fresh-baked goods, and serve as a community hub where shoppers can enjoy a juice and coffee bar while participating in workshops and classes. The 13,000 square-foot space will house a full range of offerings including a meat/seafood counter, grab-n-go options, fresh produce, a café, and even a community room within the basement.

The economic impact promises to be substantial, with projections showing Chicago Market will inject sales of more than $9 million into Uptown's local economy in its first year alone. According to the National Cooperative Grocers Association, the average co-op generates

,604 for the local economy for every
,000 spent by shoppers. Set to officially open its doors in late 2025, Chicago Market was incorporated in 2013 after a year of organizing by community members seeking to build a community-owned grocery focused on high-quality, sustainable, and local goods. The co-op secured rights to the historic landmark Gerber Building, which served as a major train station for a century.
