Las Tablas' Cultural Center and Restaurant Expansion Nears Completion in Portage Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·

Portage Park residents will soon enjoy an exciting addition to the neighborhood as Las Tablas Colombian restaurant nears completion of its ambitious expansion project at 4920 W. Irving Park Road. The four-story development, spearheaded by owner Soraya Campos who immigrated from Colombia more than 30 years ago, will feature not just an enhanced restaurant space but also a dedicated cultural center, 18 apartment units, and outdoor parking. The development is transforming the current Las Tablas lot and two adjacent previously vacant parcels, creating a vibrant new community hub in the heart of Portage Park.

Las Tablas has been a neighborhood fixture since 1999, operating from a former funeral home in Portage Park after its original founding in North Center in 1991. The restaurant has become known for showcasing Colombian culture through traditional events, live music sessions, and dance classes - a mission that will be expanded with the dedicated cultural center in the new building. With the project on track for its 2026 completion, Campos' vision represents a significant investment in Portage Park's cultural landscape and economic development.

Residents interested in learning more about this and other neighborhood developments can attend the next Portage Park Advisory Council meeting, typically held on the fourth Monday of odd-numbered months from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the fieldhouse. Community members are encouraged to support local businesses like Las Tablas as they continue to enhance our neighborhood's vibrant dining and cultural scene.
