Multi-Sport Dome Coming to Near West Side as Illinois Basketball Academy Secures Approval
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·
Near West Side residents and sports enthusiasts will soon have a state-of-the-art recreational facility in their neighborhood. The Zoning Board of Appeals has approved plans for the Illinois Basketball Academy to construct an impressive sports complex at 1802 W. Lake Street, featuring both a three-story building and an air-supported dome.
Designed by Wefing Design Studio, the development will include a three-story support building at the corner of N. Wood Street and W. Lake Street connected to a long air-supported dome that will enclose multiple sports courts. The versatile dome will host various recreational activities including basketball, soccer, lacrosse, flag football, pickleball, and volleyball. The main building will house a restaurant, concession area, and a lounge/cafeteria/study space for teams and visitors to gather between games. The project received Special Use approval for Participant Sports and Recreation Use in the Planned Manufacturing District PMD-4A, allowing it to move forward with permitting and construction.
This new facility represents a significant addition to the Near West Side's recreational infrastructure, providing year-round access to sports facilities for local youth, adults, and community organizations. While a specific timeline hasn't been announced, construction is expected to begin soon. Residents interested in learning more about the Illinois Basketball Academy's programs can follow their social media channels for upcoming announcements about facility opening dates and community registration opportunities.
