National Public Housing Museum Opens New Exhibit in University Village Little Italy
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/University Village Little Italy ·
University Village Little Italy residents and visitors have a unique new cultural attraction to explore with the National Public Housing Museum at 919 S. Ada St. The Museum, which opened its permanent home in early 2025 in the historic Jane Addams Homes, is the first cultural institution in the country dedicated to interpreting the American experience in public housing. Visitors can now explore exhibits and take tours of three recreated apartments that showcase different eras of public housing in Chicago.
The opening coincides with several winter activities happening throughout the neighborhood, including nearby ice skating opportunities and the Chicago Auto Show (February 7-16, 2026) which is bringing additional visitors to the area. Local restaurants along Taylor Street are reporting increased foot traffic as visitors combine cultural experiences with dining at the neighborhood's renowned eateries. Establishments like Pompei, The Rosebud, Tufano's Vernon Park Tap, and Conte Di Savoia are welcoming these new patrons, while the UIC campus adds a modern, educational dimension with its contemporary structures and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the National Public Housing Museum this February to learn about this important aspect of Chicago's social history. The neighborhood business association is planning a community welcome reception on February 15th to celebrate this cultural addition to University Village Little Italy's diverse offerings.
