Irving Park Businesses Unite to Transform Commercial Corridor with New Special Service Area
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Irving Park ·
The vibrant stretch of Irving Park Road between North Central Park and North Kilbourn avenues—home to coffee shops, artist studios, and a board game cafe—is making moves to secure its economic future. A coalition of 13 local businesses called Explore Irving Park Chicago (EIPC) is spearheading efforts to establish a Special Service Area (SSA) focused around the intersection of Irving Park Road and North Elston Avenue.
Working with the Pulaski Elston Business Association (PEBA), which already manages a nearby SSA, the group has submitted a feasibility assessment currently under review by Chicago's Department of Planning and Development. If approved in the coming months, a formal application could proceed by June, with the new SSA potentially becoming reality later this year. The proposed district would provide dedicated funding for beautification, events, and business support services.
Similar districts in neighboring communities have funded popular initiatives like the Live on Lawrence music series, community murals, public sculptures, landscaping, holiday decorations, and special events that draw visitors to commercial areas. Residents and business owners interested in learning more about the proposed SSA or contributing ideas for potential projects can contact EIPC through their website or attend upcoming community meetings where the plans will be discussed.
