Oakland's Winter Community Garden Initiative Transforms Mandrake Park with New Planting Program
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
The Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) has launched a new winter community garden initiative near their headquarters at 4242 S. Cottage Grove Ave. This effort is part of the organization's ongoing commitment to neighborhood revitalization through educational and recreational programs for Oakland residents of all ages and interests, including workshops and community events.
The winter planting program, which began January 6 and will run through March 20, 2026, takes place weekdays from 3pm to 6pm at Mandrake Park. The park, known for its athletic track and beautiful grounds that are regularly maintained by groundskeepers, provides an ideal setting for this community initiative. The project aligns with broader community beautification and revitalization events happening throughout Chicago neighborhoods, such as block clean-ups, garden projects, and community enhancement efforts that strengthen communities and welcome volunteers.
Residents interested in participating in the garden initiative can visit KOCO's headquarters on Cottage Grove Avenue for more information or to register. The program welcomes gardeners of all experience levels and provides tools and materials to community volunteers. This project represents another positive step in Oakland's ongoing revitalization journey, creating beautiful, functional spaces that bring neighbors together while enhancing the community's green spaces.
