New Gallery Spotlights Bronzeville Artists with 'Bending Light' Exhibition Opening This Weekend

The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) in Bronzeville will unveil its highly anticipated 'Bending Light' exhibition this Saturday, February 15, featuring works from six prominent Black artists exploring themes of identity and cultural expression in America. The exhibition, curated by Paul Branton, showcases pieces from talented creators including EDO (Eddie Santana), Courtney Collins, Robert Clark Lewis, Pearlie Taylor, Brant Lamont, and Branton himself.
The timing of this exhibition holds special significance during Black History Month, particularly in Bronzeville – the neighborhood where Dr. Carter G. Woodson first conceived the idea for Negro History Week at the Wabash YMCA, which later evolved into the national observance. The SSCAC, located at 3831 S. Michigan Avenue, continues its legacy as a cultural cornerstone of the community that has nurtured African American artistic talent for generations.
"This exhibition represents both our rich history and our vibrant present," explains gallery director Marisol Simmons. "We're inviting the community to join us for the opening reception on Saturday from 2-5pm, with light refreshments and opportunities to meet several of the featured artists." Residents interested in attending can RSVP through the center's website, and the exhibition will remain open to visitors through late April.
