Avondale Maker Space Secures Future with Community-Funded Building Purchase
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·
The future of a popular Avondale creative hub has been secured as Pumping Station: One, an 11,000-square-foot maker space at 3519 N. Elston Ave., officially purchased their building from their retiring landlord. The acquisition follows a successful crowdfunding campaign that helped the volunteer-run nonprofit raise $300,000.
For over a decade, the space has served as a second home for local makers who rely on the workshop to pursue hobbies, build friendships, and develop skills. With the building purchase complete, the organization plans to implement improvements requested by members once additional funds are raised. "It was one big project that now is about 800 little ones," said Andrew Wingate, a PS:One member and fundraising lead. "We're going to figure out an equitable way to sort of open the tap, as it were, and let things start flowing back to the areas in a larger capacity."
Looking ahead, the group plans to host a "building christening" or spring celebration in the coming months. The nonprofit hopes to make ownership of the space a collaborative process through a general operations committee. "We have great members and volunteers, so things go as smoothly as I think they could for the amount of people and the amount of things we do," Wingate added. Avondale residents interested in joining this creative community can attend their weekly Tuesday open houses at 8pm to learn more about membership options and upcoming events.
