Common Pantry Celebrates Three Years in North Center Home with Community Open House

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/North Center ·

Common Pantry, Chicago's oldest continuously operating food assistance program, is marking three successful years in its standalone North Center facility with a community open house scheduled for February 21, 2026. The 3,500-square-foot space on Lincoln Avenue has transformed how the organization serves local residents since its grand opening in 2023.

The purpose-built facility features an accessible layout with a commercial kitchen, multipurpose room, and courtyard for dining and community events. Executive Director Margaret O'Conor notes that the anniversary celebration will showcase how the pantry has evolved its services beyond emergency food distribution to include nutritional workshops, cooking demonstrations, and resource connections for neighborhood residents. "Visitors can expect high-quality fresh and non-perishable food items along with food samples, recipes, educational workshops, and connections to social services," O'Conor explained.

North Center residents are encouraged to attend the open house to learn about volunteer opportunities and the pantry's expanding community programs. Those interested in supporting Common Pantry's mission can bring shelf-stable food donations to the celebration or sign up for the organization's monthly giving program, which helps ensure sustainable operations throughout the year.
