Spoken Café's Pay-What-You-Can Community Suppers Transform Monday Nights in Ravenswood

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Ravenswood ·

As winter tightens its grip on Chicago, Spoken Café in Ravenswood is creating a warm gathering space with their innovative Monday Community Suppers program. The neighborhood café, located under the Montrose Brown Line Station, has been hosting pay-what-you-can dinners since November, featuring a new dish each month with all proceeds benefiting local food pantries.

Since launching the initiative, owners Will Goodwin and Sidonie Gaudé have directed donations to different organizations monthly, recently raising $350 for Ravenswood Community Services, which runs a food pantry and community kitchen. Regular attendee Brian describes Spoken as "a warm and welcoming place" that's "letting people know they're valuable," explaining why he now chooses these community gatherings over other Monday meal options. Another enthusiastic regular named Ash captured the spirit of the initiative perfectly: "The menu is integrity; Spoken is integrity. They take care of their employees... They really care: just look at these free dinners."

Ravenswood residents interested in participating can visit Spoken Café on Monday evenings, where all are welcome regardless of ability to pay. The café, known for "serving breakfast and lunch fare with Acadian Cajun respects, including locally roasted, organic coffees," continues to strengthen community bonds through this thoughtful initiative. For those who can't attend on Mondays, the café accepts donations for local food pantries during regular business hours as well.
