Sarah's Circle's New 'Sarah's on Sunnyside' Brings Permanent Supportive Housing for Women to Uptown

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

Uptown is set to welcome a powerful new community asset as Sarah's Circle — a nonprofit with nearly five decades of experience fighting to end homelessness for women in Chicago — moves forward with a major new development in the neighborhood. The Chicago Plan Commission took up the proposal this week for "Sarah's on Sunnyside," a seven-story, 54-unit permanent supportive housing building planned for 4458 N. Clarendon Ave., at Sunnyside Avenue, directly across from the Clarendon Community Center.

The project, backed by 46th Ward Alderwoman Angela Clay, would transform an unused parking lot into a vital resource for women earning no more than 30% of the area median income. Each efficiency unit spans approximately 480 square feet, and the building will feature thoughtful amenities including a community room with a kitchenette, a therapeutic garden, a sensory room, and onsite security and property management — with Sarah's Circle providing on-site support services. Notably, the Clarendon Park Neighborhood Association has noted that Sarah's on Sunnyside would occupy only the northernmost third of the site, leaving room for potentially two additional future buildings.

This project deepens Sarah's Circle's already meaningful footprint in Uptown, where the organization currently operates three other supportive housing developments. Neighbors who want to learn more or show their support can follow updates through the 46th Ward office or Sarah's Circle directly at sarahscircle.net.
