Galewood Neighbors Launch Petition to Finally Unlock $27M North Avenue Streetscape Makeover

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Galewood residents are turning up the pressure on state officials to deliver a long-promised corridor transformation. Galewood Neighbors, the neighborhood's active community organization, began circulating a petition last month calling on state agencies and lawmakers to "support the completion and implementation of the North Avenue Streetscape and Business Development Project" — and the response has been swift. Close to 200 Oak Park and Chicago residents have already signed on, including many North Avenue business owners who say the status quo is hurting their bottom line.

The push comes nearly eight years after Illinois backed a study recommending streetscaping improvements along North Avenue at the Chicago-Oak Park border. The State of Illinois has already approved $27.4 million to the City of Chicago for a joint streetscape running from Harlem to Central Avenue, with funds released back in summer 2023 — yet a groundbreaking date remains elusive, with construction now projected no sooner than 2028. Galewood Neighbors Chair Steve Green says the community has simply waited long enough, noting that high-speed traffic, limited parking, and poor pedestrian access make it "a struggle" for businesses without rear parking to attract customers. North Avenue District Chair Judith Alexander echoed the urgency, pointing out that a state-backed study recommended these very curb extensions, sidewalk improvements, and traffic-calming measures years ago.

Want to add your voice? Reach out to Galewood Neighbors to sign the petition and help push this transformative project over the finish line for the benefit of the entire community.
