DMApothecary Rises Again: Beloved Edgewater Herb Shop Opens Bright New Broadway Home

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

Edgewater's beloved herbal apothecary is turning a new page — and throwing open new doors. DMApothecary, the mother-son shop known for its 500+ jars of herbs and handcrafted wellness goods, is celebrating its grand reopening at 5430 N. Broadway this Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Neighbors can stop in for free tea-mocktails and soap bar samples as the shop officially welcomes customers to its fresh start.

The journey to Broadway has been anything but easy. Owner Deirdre Austin and her son Matthew Walcott first opened DMApothecary in 2022 at 5230 N. Sheridan Road, but nine separate instances of flooding at their former building cost the business an estimated $22,000 in lost sales and damaged inventory, forcing the shop to close for a total of 13 months. Through it all, Austin's vision never wavered — she launched the apothecary in 2016 as a tribute to her late mother, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Now, with a bright new space on Broadway, Austin plans to revive beloved tea tastings and bring back hands-on soap- and candle-making classes that the floods had shut down.

"I want people to be able to come here and just unwind," Austin said of her new home. Edgewater residents looking for a peaceful, community-minded neighborhood gem are encouraged to stop by the grand opening this Saturday — and keep an eye out for upcoming workshop events at the new shop.
