Curie High Students Bring Voices to Life with Community Zines Now on Display at Archer Heights Library

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Archer Heights ·

Archer Heights has a vibrant new creative showcase worth checking out this weekend. Students from Curie Metro High School's Topics in World Art class have created original zines — self-published, handcrafted booklets — that are now on display and free to take home at the Archer Heights Branch of the Chicago Public Library at 5055 S. Archer Avenue.

The student artists used a variety of hands-on techniques including collage, stencils, and drawing to produce colorful, thought-provoking booklets reflecting on issues they care about in their community. The class also paired spoken word poetry with their visual art, giving the project a deeply personal and expressive dimension. As a group, the students hoped to spark conversation and connect with neighbors beyond the classroom walls — and now they can, with their work displayed right in the heart of the neighborhood.

This kind of student-community collaboration is exactly what makes Archer Heights special. Residents are encouraged to stop by the library — open Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM — to pick up a free zine, support the young artists of Curie High, and experience firsthand the creative energy thriving in this Southwest Side community. You can also explore digital versions of the zines on the class's blog, Guerrilla Art 5.
