A Bucktown Classic Gets a New Chapter: Construction Begins on Danny's Tavern Site After Quarter-Century of History

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bucktown ·

Bucktown is turning the page on one of its most beloved landmarks, as the city has officially issued a construction permit for the lot that once housed Danny's Tavern, the neighborhood dive bar that called 1951 W. Dickens Avenue home for decades before closing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The permit, released through the Chicago Data Portal on February 9, 2026, signals the end of a years-long wait since the storied two-story building from 1898 was permitted for demolition in January.

Rising in its place will be a four-story plus basement, three-unit residential building designed by Hanna Architects for developer 2702 Greenview LLC of Blue Island — a team that previously collaborated on a well-received three-unit project in Lincoln Park. The new structure will include two basement parking spaces and a detached rear garage, offering much-needed housing in one of Chicago's most walkable and desirable neighborhoods.

While longtime regulars will always remember Danny's dark, candlelit atmosphere and its reputation as a late-night creative haunt, the arrival of new residents promises to bring fresh energy to the block. Bucktown Community Organization members curious about the timeline of construction or design details are encouraged to connect with their alderman's office for the latest updates as the project gets underway.
