Relief Is Coming: I-55 Ashland Avenue Exit Expected to Reopen After Months of Winter Repairs

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Mckinley Park ·

McKinley Park commuters who've been navigating months of detours may finally be nearing the light at the end of the tunnel — literally. The Ashland Avenue exit on the inbound I-55 Stevenson Expressway, which closed back on November 3, 2025, is expected to reopen this month after the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) completes its retaining wall and pavement repair work at the ramp.

Since the closure began, drivers exiting toward South Ashland Avenue have been rerouted to the South Damen Avenue exit, adding distance and extra traffic through the heart of McKinley Park. IDOT noted a neighborhood shortcut was available — heading south on Damen, east on West 33rd Street, and north on South Archer Avenue — but many residents have still felt the pinch during peak hours near the 35th/Ashland Orange Line El station underpass. The work, described by IDOT as "necessary to accommodate retaining wall and pavement repairs," has been a familiar sight for anyone traveling through the neighborhood this winter.

With the repairs wrapping up, McKinley Park drivers can look forward to restored access and smoother daily commutes heading into spring. It's one more sign that the neighborhood's infrastructure is getting the attention it deserves. Keep an eye on IDOT's official traffic alerts at idot.illinois.gov for the latest on reopening timing — and welcome back, Ashland exit!
