Since the closure began, drivers exiting toward South Ashland Avenue have been rerouted to the South Damen Avenue exit, adding distance and extra traffic through the heart of McKinley Park. IDOT noted a neighborhood shortcut was available — heading south on Damen, east on West 33rd Street, and north on South Archer Avenue — but many residents have still felt the pinch during peak hours near the 35th/Ashland Orange Line El station underpass.
