Pulaski Day in Humboldt Park: A Chicago Holiday That Hits Different on the West Side
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
While much of Chicago treats Pulaski Day as little more than a day off school, Humboldt Park has long given the holiday its own West Side flavor — and this year is no different. Observed on Monday, March 2, the holiday honoring Polish-American Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski lands in a neighborhood that wears its multicultural roots proudly, where Puerto Rican flags line Paseo Boricua and the 219-acre park at the heart of the community remains one of the city's great public spaces year-round.
The Humboldt Park Branch of the Chicago Public Library will be closed today in observance of the holiday, but the park itself is open and worth a visit — especially for neighbors who haven't recently stopped by the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, housed inside the neighborhood's historic stable building near the lagoon. The museum, a cultural anchor for the community, celebrates the artistic and historical legacy of Puerto Ricans in Chicago and is free to the public. Meanwhile, Humboldt Park's field house — with its fitness center, two gymnasiums, and meeting rooms — continues to serve as a neighborhood hub all winter long.
Looking for something to put on the calendar? The annual Sangria Festival is back on the books for 2026, set to return to Humboldt Park with its signature mix of Latin American food, live music, and warm-weather community spirit. Stay tuned to the Chicago Park District events page and neighborhood social boards for dates and details as spring approaches — and in the meantime, bundle up and take a stroll through one of Chicago's most beloved parks today.
