Portage Park Packs the House: 200+ Neighbors Flood Bike Network Meeting in Show of Community Power
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
Portage Park showed up — and then some. On the evening of March 5, more than 200 residents streamed into the Portage Park Senior Center to weigh in on the city's proposed neighborhood bike network, turning what could have been a routine planning meeting into one of the most energized civic gatherings the Northwest Side has seen in years. The turnout was so overwhelming that the line of attendees snaked all the way out to the parking lot before the doors even opened.
The enthusiasm wasn't lost on city officials. "The community has really responded very well to this. They're very engaged, and I think there's a lot of excitement," said David Smith, assistant commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation. Neighbors shared personal stories about biking with their kids, commuting by bicycle to local schools, and wanting safer streets — a testament to just how deeply residents care about the future of their neighborhood. CDOT's Brad Huff confirmed that all funding for the project will draw from Complete Streets money already set aside for pedestrian safety, with lanes and greenways slated for installation in late 2026 or early 2027.
The packed meeting is a powerful reminder that Portage Park is a neighborhood with its hands firmly on the wheel of its own future. Residents who haven't yet had their say can still complete CDOT's online survey through March 15.
