Big Dreams at 115th & Halsted: $200 Million Morgan Park Commons Vision Promises to Transform West Pullman's Commercial Heart
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·
A sweeping vision for West Pullman's commercial future is taking shape at one of the neighborhood's most storied intersections — and the ambition behind it is hard to miss. The nonprofit Far South Community Development Corporation (Far South CDC) is spearheading a 12-acre, 258-unit mixed-use development called Morgan Park Commons, planned for the corridor at 115th and Halsted streets — the same site where a Jewel-Osco once anchored community life. With $200 million in projected investment, the plan aims to make West Pullman more walkable, better resourced, and stocked with expanded housing options the neighborhood has long needed.
Far South CDC President Abraham Lacy has a vivid picture of what's coming: ground-floor restaurants and retail beneath residential units, a two-and-a-half-acre public park, and the kind of daily destinations that keep dollars — and neighbors — close to home. "Imagine being able to walk down the street and enjoy a two-and-a-half-acre park," Lacy said. The project, six years in the making, is designed to be a permanent anchor that replaces the cycle of closures that have frustrated residents in recent years.
With the Red Line Extension, Habitat for Humanity's new townhomes, and Indian Trails' renovation all converging on the Far South Side, Morgan Park Commons represents yet another bold piece of West Pullman's larger puzzle clicking into place. Residents eager to track the project's progress or get involved can reach out to Far South Community Development Corporation at farsouthcdc.org.
