Pilsen Community Books Turns a New Page: Worker-Owned Bookstore Reopens at New 18th Street Home

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·

Book lovers in Pilsen have a fresh reason to browse their favorite shelves. Pilsen Community Books, the beloved worker-owned independent bookstore, has reopened its doors at a brand-new location at 1531 W. 18th St. — bringing its one-of-a-kind literary spirit to a new corner of the neighborhood it has long called home.

The reopening marks an exciting new chapter for the community-rooted shop, which hit the ground running with a packed slate of programming right out of the gate. Among the first events was a book club discussion hosted by local rapid response group PUÑO on 'Open Veins of Latin America,' followed by a community conversation on the current political moment featuring Vijay Prashad and Bill Ayers, and a book talk with author Alice Yang. It's exactly the kind of engaged, ideas-first programming that has made Pilsen Community Books a neighborhood institution. The new store keeps its welcoming hours: Monday through Friday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sundays 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Neighbors are encouraged to stop in, pick up a book, and show their support for one of Pilsen's most cherished community spaces. The bookstore is also accepting donations to help cover moving and construction costs — a small investment in keeping independent, worker-owned culture alive on 18th Street.
