Grand Avenue's Big Transformation: West Town Neighbors Rally Around Phase 2 of the 'Complete Streets' Rebuild
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·
West Town's Grand Avenue is about to get a major makeover — and the neighborhood is making its voice heard. The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is pressing ahead with Phase 2 of its ambitious Grand Avenue 'Complete Streets' reconstruction, which will extend concrete-protected bike lanes, bus boarding islands, and pedestrian upgrades from Damen Avenue east to Ogden Avenue later this year.
The project builds on real results already delivered by Phase 1. The stretch between Chicago Avenue and Damen Avenue — completed in Summer 2024 — has already produced a measurable reduction in severe crashes, safer vehicle speeds, increased bike ridership, and fewer traffic injuries compared to untreated sections of Grand Avenue. CDOT says the second phase will also address aging infrastructure including roadway, utility, and structural improvements that have long been overdue.
A passionate group of residents and business owners — including Alliance Bakery owner Peter Rios and Golden Triangle co-owner Douglas Van Tress — have been engaging loudly with the process, calling for guaranteed emergency vehicle access, parking protections, and continued dialogue as construction ramps up. CDOT has pledged to continue coordinating with neighbors and local businesses to minimize disruption throughout the build. West Town residents who want to stay informed or share feedback can visit the project page on the CDOT website or connect with Ald. Daniel La Spata's office — because on Grand Avenue, your voice is part of the blueprint.
