Edgewater Hits a High Note: New Homes Rise on Sheridan, Rent Comes to Loyola & Music Fills the Library

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

Edgewater is humming with energy this week as construction milestones, performing arts excitement, and community programming converge to remind neighbors just how vibrant this lakefront community is.

First, a major construction milestone on the lakefront: a 50-unit residential development at 5354 North Sheridan Road has reached its fifth and final floor. Situated on the southwest corner of Sheridan Road and Balmoral Avenue — just west of Foster Beach and the Lakefront Trail — the project replaces a long-vacant site that was formerly home to a 1913-built mansion and, later, the Wing Hoe Chinese restaurant. When complete, the building will bring dozens of new neighbors to one of Edgewater's most scenic corridors. Meanwhile, just a few blocks south, the transit-oriented development at 1101 West Berwyn Avenue — steps from the Berwyn Red Line stop — is wrapping up and on track for its March 2026 opening, adding another 56 units to the neighborhood's growing housing stock.

On the cultural front, Loyola University Chicago is staging Jonathan Larson's beloved musical *Rent* from March 26 through April 12 — and Edgewater Village Chicago has secured a special 20% discount for neighbors attending the Sunday, March 29 matinee. And if you're looking for something to do today, head over to the Edgewater Branch Library at 4 p.m. for the Edgewater Community Music Jam — a free, all-levels acoustic session open to players, singers, and listeners alike. Spots are still available!

From rising rooftops to rising curtains, Edgewater is on the move. Check out evchicago.org and chipublib.org for more on upcoming events.
