Books, Cranes & Green Beer: The Loop Is Having One Big Week
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·
Spring is arriving in The Loop with a burst of exciting news — and this week delivered on multiple fronts. First, book lovers can start marking their calendars: Barnes & Noble has confirmed it will open a massive 30,000-square-foot flagship store at 150 N. State St. in June, set to become the bookseller's largest Chicago location. The three-floor space — formerly occupied by Old Navy — will also eventually feature a café, making it a true neighborhood destination for Loop residents, workers, and visitors alike.
And the construction momentum is equally hard to miss. A pair of tower crane permits were issued for Chicago on March 12th — one of them destined for The Loop — a tangible sign that big residential projects are moving from blueprints to reality in 2026. Meanwhile, developers have secured both funding and a permit for an office-to-residential conversion at 65 E. Wacker, where the building known as Wacker Place will be transformed into 252 luxury apartments, adding yet more full-time residents to the neighborhood's growing 24/7 fabric.
And just in time for the weekend: St. Patrick's Day celebrations are in full swing in The Loop, with Industry Ales hosting a festive lineup of specialty brews, food, and live entertainment right in the heart of downtown. Whether you're raising a green pint or browsing future bookshelves on State Street, your neighborhood has plenty of reasons to get out and celebrate this Sunday. Follow the Chicago Loop Alliance for the latest on what's opening and what's popping up near you.
