Bronzeville Seniors Score $820K Grant to Build Their Dream Café and Wellness Hub on the South Side
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
Bronzeville's senior community is about to get a long-awaited home of their own. The Silver Fox Cafe — a community space dreamed up by South Side seniors themselves — has received an $820,000 grant from the Neighborhood Capital Fund, a citywide initiative that supports real estate development in historically underinvested Chicago communities.
The Silver Fox Cafe will be a vibrant mixed-use destination where seniors can gather, eat, and thrive. During daytime hours, the space will operate an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, while the rear of the building will host exercise classes, art therapy, and other enrichment programming. The café concept grew organically out of events already beloved in the community: since 2023, the Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) has hosted Silver Fox pop-up events each month, drawing hundreds of attendees who have celebrated Black fashion, culture, and connection. Now, those pop-ups are getting a permanent home.
The Neighborhood Capital Fund — backed by major donors including the Chicago Community Trust, JPMorgan Chase, and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation — is distributing roughly $20 million to Chicago organizations through 2027, with Bronzeville's Silver Fox Cafe joining a wave of South and West Side projects set to transform their blocks. With the café landing just down the street from Bronzeville Winery and Cleo's, organizers are hopeful the cluster of community anchors will spark exponential economic growth in the neighborhood. Keep an eye on KOCO's channels for updates on the Silver Fox Cafe's development — and in the meantime, stop by one of their next pop-up events to experience the community spirit that made this grant possible.
