A Baby Rhino is Born! Lincoln Park Zoo Celebrates a Critically Endangered Arrival — Plus, a Bold New Restaurant Is Headed to North Clark

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Lincoln Park ·

Lincoln Park is roaring into spring with two incredible milestones that have the whole neighborhood buzzing. Lincoln Park Zoo made history this week with the birth of a female eastern black rhinoceros calf — one of the world's most critically endangered species. Born at 4:52 a.m. on Thursday to 20-year-old mother Kapuki, the calf weighed about 60 pounds and took her very first steps just an hour and a half later. The birth is part of a specialized breeding program for the species, of which only about 1,000 remain in the wild. It's a landmark moment not just for the zoo, but for global conservation efforts — and a beautiful reminder of why Lincoln Park Zoo's work matters so deeply to our community. Stop by and welcome the newest — and most majestic — Lincoln Park resident!

On the dining front, food lovers have a thrilling new reason to watch the 2600 N. Clark St. address: Muhājir, an ambitious live-fire restaurant inspired by historic spice trade routes from Asia to Europe, is set to open there in May. The team behind the beloved Lilac Tiger is bringing bold, globally influenced cooking to Lincoln Park, with a menu featuring dishes like seafood crudos, dosa with prawn ghee roast, and braised meats. And tucked behind it will be Bobo, a speakeasy inspired by Filipino street markets — making this one of the most exciting double-concept openings the neighborhood has seen in years.

With a baby rhino to celebrate and a blockbuster restaurant to anticipate, Lincoln Park's spring is off to an extraordinary start. Visit Lincoln Park Zoo to meet Kapuki's calf, and keep an eye on Muhājir's social channels for updates on the May opening!
