Galewood Has Been Without Its Own Library for 15 Years — That Could Finally Change
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Galewood is a neighborhood that takes care of its own — but for 15 years, residents have had to travel to do something as simple as check out a book. The community has been without a full-fledged library branch since 2010, with the nearest option being the North Austin branch, roughly two miles away. Now, with the future of the former Mars Wrigley factory site at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave. still being shaped, neighbors and local advocates are pushing hard to make a library a centerpiece of whatever comes next.
Galewood resident and Northwest Austin Council executive director Stephen Robinson has been among those making the case publicly, arguing the neighborhood deserves a proper branch — not a retrofitted workaround. Ald. Chris Taliaferro has also floated the possibility of expanding an existing nearby property, though community members like Robinson have raised practical concerns about space and parking at that option. The library question has become one of the most galvanizing issues in the broader Mars site debate, giving residents a shared, concrete goal to rally around.
Whether a library lands at the Mars site or finds a new home elsewhere in Galewood, the community's voice on this issue has never been louder — or better organized. Want to add your name to the push for a Galewood library? Connect with the Galewood Montclare Community Organization or reach out to Ald. Taliaferro's 29th Ward office to make your case heard.
