Meet the 24-Year-Old Garfield Ridge Native Drafting the Neighborhood's First-Ever Master Plan — Garfield Ridge 2050

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Garfield Ridge ·

Garfield Ridge has always been the kind of neighborhood that takes care of its own — and now, one of its youngest residents is taking care of its future. Danny Villalobos, a 24-year-old University of Illinois Chicago graduate student in urban planning and lifelong Garfield Ridge resident, has authored what may be the neighborhood's most ambitious document ever: Garfield Ridge 2050, the area's first-ever comprehensive community plan.

Villalobos didn't just sit down and write it alone. Before putting pen to paper, he published a multilingual community survey asking neighbors what they love about Garfield Ridge and what they hope will change — drawing 216 responses from across the community. He also met with local business owners, neighborhood organizations, and alderpersons spanning the four wards that carve up Garfield Ridge, including Ald. Mike Rodríguez (22nd) and Ald. Silvana Tabares (23rd). A key vision in the plan: transforming Archer Avenue into a true "main street" destination with vibrant retail and housing above existing storefronts. Villalobos also formally presented the plan to a city planner with Chicago's Department of Planning and Development, finding strong alignment on the future of Archer Avenue — where the city is already exploring transit-friendly improvements including bike lanes.

Ald. Rodríguez praised Villalobos for "engaging with working class people who don't normally engage in these processes." Whether you're a longtime homeowner or a newcomer, Garfield Ridge 2050 is your plan too. Follow the conversation and find out how you can weigh in at blockclubchicago.org.
