West Town Goes Viral: Neighborhood's New Delivery Robots Are Sparking a Big Conversation About Tech on Chicago Streets
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·
West Town just had its most-talked-about moment of the year — and it rolled right through a bus shelter. A Serve Robotics delivery robot made national headlines this week after crashing into a CTA bus shelter near the intersection of North Racine and West Grand Avenues, shattering the glass panel. Video of the robot calmly rolling through the debris went viral on social media, racking up 3.6 million views on X and turning West Town into ground zero for Chicago's growing debate about autonomous delivery technology on city sidewalks.
Serve Robotics, which operates its main Chicago hub at 1612 W. Fulton St., launched its sidewalk robot pilot program in the neighborhood earlier this month. Ald. Walter Burnett (27th Ward) quickly stepped in, confirming his office is in direct contact with the company and stressing "the importance of public safety and consistent monitoring of these robots." Serve Robotics CEO Ali Kashani told WBEZ the company is open to engaging with concerned Chicagoans — and that every email sent to the company receives a response. Ald. Burnett added that he will weigh resident and business owner feedback before making any final determination on the robots' long-term presence in the ward.
Love them or not, West Town is officially at the forefront of a citywide conversation about the future of urban delivery. Got a take? Reach out to Ald. Burnett's office or contact Serve Robotics directly — your voice matters as this pilot program evolves.
