Wicker Park's War on Rats Is Actually Working — And the Program Is Expanding

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·

Wicker Park residents fed up with rodents have reason to celebrate: the neighborhood's innovative rat birth control pilot program is showing real, measurable results — and organizers are now moving to bring it to even more blocks.

The initiative, administered by SSA No. 33 through the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce, uses SenesTech's contraceptive bait product, which the EPA has labeled a "minimum risk pesticide" — meaning it poses little to no risk to people, pets, or the environment. The approach was championed in part because neighbors with young children and pets wanted a solution that didn't rely on potentially harmful rodenticide poisons. With early data pointing to a meaningful reduction in rat activity across treated areas, organizers have announced plans to expand the program to additional parts of Wicker Park and Bucktown. A similar fertility-control pilot is also underway in Lincoln Park, with results expected later this spring.

It's a win rooted in community-driven problem-solving — and proof that Wicker Park neighbors and local institutions can tackle even the city's gnarliest challenges together.
