Aim High, Washington Park: Free Archery Program Launches at the Field House This April
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park residents have a brand-new reason to head to the field house this spring — and it involves a bow, some arrows, and zero cost to participate. The Chicago Park District just launched a free Archery instruction program at the Washington Park field house (5531 S. Martin Luther King Drive), running every Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. now through June 3, 2026. Open to youth ages 8 through 14, the program is part of the park's robust spring season lineup — and the $0 price tag makes it one of the most accessible new offerings the neighborhood has seen in a while.
The archery debut is one of several fresh spring additions at the 345-acre park, which also rolled out free-to-low-cost Basketball Skills classes for toddlers on Saturday mornings and adult open basketball on Tuesdays — a full slate that signals the field house is firing on all cylinders heading into warmer months. It's the kind of programming that reminds neighbors just how much is available right in their backyard at one of Chicago's most storied park spaces, originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.
And the good news doesn't stop at the park's edge. Sunshine Gospel Ministries is pressing forward on its ambitious three-story, $36.9 million community center planned for vacant lots at 60th and 61st Streets near King Drive and Calumet Avenue — a future hub set to include a gym with a roller skating rink, recording studio, tech room, and café with a performance stage. Want to get involved or stay in the loop? Head to ChicagoParkDistrict.com to register for archery and other spring programs, and connect with your neighbors at the Washington Park Advisory Council's monthly meeting, held the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
