Pilsen Marks Good Friday with 49-Year Via Crucis Tradition — and a New Mixed-Use Building Coming to Blue Island Ave.
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·
Pilsen rang in this Holy Weekend in deeply meaningful fashion. Hundreds of neighbors and visitors gathered along 18th Street on Friday for the neighborhood's beloved Via Crucis procession — a solemn, community-rooted tradition now in its 49th consecutive year. The living reenactment of the 14 Stations of the Cross winds through the heart of Pilsen, with scenes depicting the Last Supper and the crucifixion, before wrapping up with a closing prayer at Saint Pius Church. This year, a DePaul University student played the role of Jesus as organizers work to bring more young people into the fold. Via Crucis coordinator Jason Rodriguez described the event as a source of communal strength, and for many families like Talissa Guerrero's, it's a multigenerational tradition passed lovingly from grandmothers to grandchildren.
Meanwhile, Pilsen's built environment is growing right alongside its cultural fabric. A full building permit was issued this week for a brand-new mixed-use development at 2006 S. Blue Island Ave. Planned by Fox Pilsen 4 LLC and designed by Hanna Architects, the four-story building will bring 900 square feet of ground-floor retail space, nine new residential units, four car parking spaces, and nine bike parking spaces to the neighborhood — a welcome addition to one of Pilsen's busiest corridors.
Whether you're reflecting on faith and community at the Via Crucis or excited about what's rising on Blue Island Ave., this weekend is a reminder of just how alive Pilsen's spirit truly is.
