Miniatures, Millions & Masterstrokes: McKinley Park Scores Big in Arts & Economic Investment This Weekend

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Mckinley Park ·

McKinley Park is making headlines on two big fronts this weekend — one splashing world-class art across the neighborhood and another pouring $2.5 million into its commercial corridors.

First, art lovers have a can't-miss reason to head to Julius Caesar Gallery, 3808 S. Ashland Ave., tonight. The Barely Fair Chicago Night Reception runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, showcasing a remarkable exhibition of 30 booths built at 1:12 scale — each one a fully realized miniature gallery space representing artist collectives and commercial galleries from around the world. The evening also features Lewis Bag, an experimental cocktail lounge installation by artist Tony Lewis, turning the whole experience into an immersive evening of art and atmosphere right in the heart of McKinley Park. And if you miss tonight, the Barely Fair Last Call Reception returns on Saturday, April 11, for one final night at the same location.

Meanwhile, a major economic win just landed for the neighborhood's two most beloved commercial strips. The City of Chicago has earmarked $2.5 million in grant funding for storefront and streetscape improvements along West 35th Street and South Archer Avenue, as part of the Department of Planning and Development's Commercial Corridor Storefront Activation Program — and McKinley Park is one of just 12 neighborhoods citywide selected for the initiative. Grants will cover up to 75 percent of eligible project costs for qualifying small businesses and property owners, with a preference for locally owned businesses serving everyday community needs. A Zoom webinar to help applicants navigate the process is set for 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.

From gallery walls to storefront awnings, McKinley Park is having a landmark week. Grab tickets for Barely Fair at ARTSVP, and visit mpdcchicago.org for details on how to apply for the storefront activation grants before the window closes.
