Landmark Moment: Edgewater's Bryn Mawr Historic District Inches Closer to City Protection — Plus, Swords, Soccer & Spring on the Horizon
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·
Edgewater is making history — literally — as the city moves to formally protect one of the neighborhood's most storied corridors. The Chicago Commission on Chicago Landmarks held an initial hearing on April 2 to consider granting preliminary landmark status to the Bryn Mawr Historic District, which stretches along Bryn Mawr Avenue from Broadway to Sheridan Road. The district includes celebrated buildings like the Edgewater Beach Apartments at 5555 N. Sheridan Road, the Belle Shore Apartment Hotel at 5550 N. Kenmore Ave., and the Manor House — all landmarks of the neighborhood's grand early 20th-century character. Edgewater Historical Society President John Holden called the corridor "culturally significant" as the site of Edgewater's first business district, and expressed hope that landmarking would finally spur long-needed renovations for some of the district's more weathered buildings. Chicago landmarks also become eligible for restoration grants through the city's Adopt A Landmark program — a welcome boost for a corridor that's already bouncing back beautifully after years of pandemic hardship and Red Line construction. Stay tuned for next steps from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.
Meanwhile, spring is serving up a full neighborhood calendar. Theater fans should mark Thursday, April 23, for the Edgewater Historical Society's monthly Salon series, this time spotlighting Babes with Blades — a Chicago theatre company known for its thrilling, sword-fighting-forward productions. The free 6 p.m. event continues one of Edgewater's most beloved community traditions. And for sports lovers, Edgewater Castle FC kicks off its 2026 season on May 16, with men's and women's teams playing at Winnemac Stadium (5105 N. Leavitt St.). Season tickets start at just $60 for adults and $30 for kids. Whether your passion is history, theatre, or cheering on the home team, Edgewater's spring has something for everyone.
