Summer Camp Season Is Coming: Here's What Washington Park Families Need to Know About the Park District's New Registration Process
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Good news for Washington Park parents: the Chicago Park District just announced meaningful changes to its notoriously competitive summer camp registration process — and this year, signing up should feel a lot less like a scramble. The Park District unveiled the first wave of improvements to address what it acknowledged as "long-standing registration frustrations," with the updates taking effect for the 2026 summer season.
Families can get a full rundown of the changes during a free informational webinar on April 14 — one week before registration officially opens. For Washington Park residents, that means parks east of California Avenue (including Washington Park's own field house at 5531 S. Martin Luther King Drive) open online registration on April 21, with in-person registration following on April 27. Summer day camps run June 22 through July 31. Last year, nearly 20,000 children ages 6 to 12 attended camps at close to 200 park locations citywide — and demand keeps growing.
And while you're planning your summer, don't overlook a free cultural gem right in the neighborhood: the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center at 740 E. 56th Place offers free admission every Wednesday throughout 2026, with always-free entry for military, first responders, and Illinois public school students. It's a perfect complement to a day at the park. Head to ChicagoParkDistrict.com to learn more about camp registration, and connect with neighbors at the Washington Park Advisory Council, which meets every third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
