Roots & Rhymes: Archer Heights Celebrates Earth Month With Fruit Trees, Fresh Soil, and Free Poetry

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Archer Heights ·

April is shaping up to be a green and creative month in Archer Heights — and neighbors have two can't-miss community events to put on their calendars right now.

First, get your hands dirty for a good cause. Openlands and the Cultivate Collective are teaming up with the Academy of Global Citizenship, located at 4942 W. 44th St. in neighboring Garfield Ridge, for an Earth Day tree-planting event that directly benefits the Southwest Side. Volunteers will plant fruit trees and help tend to the organization's local community garden — a hands-on way to invest in green space, fresh food access, and environmental pride right here in the community. RSVP is required in advance, so don't wait to grab your spot.

Then, on Saturday, April 11, the Archer Heights Branch Library gets lyrical. As part of Chicago's citywide celebration of National Poetry Month, the branch is hosting a free Bilingual Poetry Workshop — a perfect opportunity for neighbors of all ages and backgrounds to explore the written word in both English and Spanish in a welcoming, no-pressure setting.

From planting roots in the soil to finding your voice on the page, Archer Heights is blooming this April. RSVP for the tree planting at Openlands.org and drop into the poetry workshop at 5055 S. Archer Ave. on April 11 — no ticket required.
