Amundsen Park Is Back — And Galewood Neighbors Are Making the Most of It

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Spring in Galewood just got a whole lot more energetic, and a big reason why is right next door at Amundsen Park. After a prolonged and emotionally charged fight to keep the fieldhouse open to the community, Galewood and Austin-area residents are now celebrating its full return — and they're showing up in force. The Chicago Park District fieldhouse, which boasts a state-of-the-art track and football/soccer field beloved by locals of all ages, has been buzzing with activity as warmer weather rolls in and families reclaim the green space they rallied so hard to protect.

The community's victory at Amundsen Park is part of a broader story of Galewood residents refusing to let outside forces reshape their neighborhood without a fight. That same spirit has been on full display in ongoing conversations about the landmarked former Mars Wrigley factory at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave. Developer McCaffery Interests has acknowledged that the iconic landmarked structure on Oak Park Avenue could serve as a community gathering space — a vision that aligns closely with what neighbors have been demanding since community meetings in 2022 called for 'community gathering, environmental sustainability, and green space' as central priorities for the site.

From reclaiming Amundsen Park's fieldhouse to shaping the future of one of Chicago's most storied factory buildings, Galewood's residents are proving that organized, persistent community voices get results.
