Casa Nayarit Is Coming to Pilsen: $48M Affordable Housing Project Brings 76 Homes and a New Child Care Center to 18th Street
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·
Big news landed in Pilsen this week — and it's been a long time coming. Mayor Brandon Johnson and local leaders announced plans for Casa Nayarit, a $48 million, seven-story affordable housing development set to rise on one of the neighborhood's largest vacant lots at 900 W. 18th St., at the corner of 18th and Peoria streets. Leading the charge is The Resurrection Project, a Pilsen-based nonprofit with deep roots in the community and a proven track record on nearby developments like Casa Yucatán and Casa Durango.
Casa Nayarit will bring 76 permanently affordable apartments to the neighborhood — a mix of studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom units — along with a rooftop deck, outdoor playground, bike storage, laundry facilities, and a multipurpose room. But perhaps the most exciting feature: a ground-floor early childhood education center to be operated by Chicago Commons, giving Pilsen families a place to live and learn under one roof. The project is backed in part by low-income housing tax credits, with construction targeted to begin in 2027. The ward's zoning advisory board is set to review the proposal at its April 13 meeting — right around the corner.
"It's our story of 'el pueblo unido jamás será vencido,'" said Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th), reflecting on more than two decades of community organizing that made this moment possible.
