Washington Park Playground Could Get a New Name — And the Story Behind It Is All About Community Love

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·

A small playlot at 53rd Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive may soon carry a powerful new name — and the push to make it happen is a testament to years of grassroots dedication right here in Washington Park. At its April 8 meeting, the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners voted to kick off a 45-day public notice period to officially rename the unnamed playground the Ronald "Ronnieman" Johnson Playground. The proposed name honors Johnson as a beloved member of the community whose contributions, the Park District noted, led to 'civic betterment, including posthumous contributions made in his name through advocacy and charitable efforts.'

Leading that charge has been Johnson's mother, Dorothy Holmes, who has organized annual toy drives, winter clothing collections, and back-to-school supply drives in Washington Park in her son's name for years. She was joined in the formal request by Chicago Torture Justice Center executive director Aislinn Pulley, and supporters say a renamed playground would cement that charitable legacy permanently into the neighborhood's landscape. Under Park District rules, the 45-day Phase I notice period gathers feedback from nearby residents and park advisory councils before any proposal can advance to a final Phase II board vote.

This is your moment to weigh in, Washington Park. Residents can submit comments through the Chicago Park District at ChicagoParkDistrict.com.
