A Century-Old Landmark Gets a Second Act: The Portage Theater Is Coming Back to Life

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·

Portage Park neighbors, take note — one of Milwaukee Avenue's most storied landmarks is finally getting the love it deserves. The 106-year-old Portage Theater at 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. is undergoing a meaningful restoration under its new owner, Chris Bauman of Zenith Music Group, and the progress is real. Bauman, who has dreamed of turning the historic venue into a true community gathering space hosting concerts, film screenings, and indoor markets, has already paid off more than $500,000 in back taxes owed on the property and has begun cleaning up the theater's long-neglected interior — a major milestone for a building that sat vacant since 2018 and was named one of Illinois' most endangered historic sites as recently as 2024.

Bauman is no stranger to the Portage Theater — he organized events there from 2014 to 2018 before going on to found Avondale Music Hall and purchase the nearby Patio Theater in 2019. Now, with Zenith Music Group at the helm, he's applying for grants and taking over payments on the protective canopy erected beneath the damaged marquee, signaling a serious, long-term commitment to the building's future.

And if you're already marking your calendar for summer fun in Portage Park, don't forget: the Windy City Hot Dog Fest is returning to the neighborhood on May 29–31, where vendors will compete for the coveted title of best hot dog in Chicago. Between a beloved theater being reborn and a sizzling summer festival on the horizon, Portage Park's Milwaukee Avenue corridor has never had more reasons to draw a crowd.
