Lace Up for a Cause: Garfield Ridge's Stars and Stripes 5K Returns June 27 to Honor First Responders

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Garfield Ridge ·

Garfield Ridge has long worn its first responder pride on its sleeve — and this summer, it's lacing it up on its sneakers too. The annual Garfield Ridge Stars and Stripes 5K Run is officially set for Saturday, June 27, 2026, giving Southwest Siders of all fitness levels a meaningful way to hit the pavement and give back at the same time.

Now in its ninth year since launching in 2017, the Stars and Stripes 5K is about far more than a morning run. The event is dedicated to honoring the men and women who serve as first responders — especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice — and raises funds for distinguished nonprofits that support individuals facing traumatic circumstances. Past beneficiaries have included the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Project, the 100 Club of Chicago, and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. This year, organizers have already announced a 2026 honoree from the Chicago Fire Department, keeping the event's deep community roots front and center.

The race includes both a 5K Adult division and a 5K Youth division, making it a true family affair for the neighborhood. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a first-timer, the Stars and Stripes 5K is one of Garfield Ridge's most meaningful warm-weather traditions. Registration is open now at runsignup.com — sign up, spread the word, and join your neighbors on June 27 for a run that truly matters!
