The Loop's Comeback Story: Leaders Unite at Sold-Out State Street Summit to Chart a Vibrant Future

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

Big things are happening on State Street — and the people shaping The Loop's future want you to know it. This week, city and business leaders packed the iconic Macy's Walnut Room for a sold-out summit dedicated to one bold question: how do we make State Street a 'great street' again? The energy in the room made one thing clear — the momentum is real.

Chicago Loop Alliance Chair Kemena Brooks pointed to a wave of fresh investment as proof that confidence in downtown is growing. At least 45 new businesses opened in the Loop last year, and the Alliance reports that at least 26 more have already opened or are set to open in 2026. Meanwhile, Chicago's Department of Planning and Development Commissioner Ciere Boatright highlighted the growing push to convert underutilized office buildings into housing and hotels — a strategy that would bring more residents, more foot traffic, and more private investment back to the corridor. Adding fuel to the fire, Mayor Brandon Johnson officially launched a new Tourism Improvement District the same day, projected to raise nearly $40 million annually for Choose Chicago to attract visitors citywide.

"The Loop is just a critically important place," said Rich Gamble, Interim CEO of the Chicago Loop Alliance — and after this week's summit, it's hard to disagree. Stop by your favorite State Street spots and show them some love, and stay plugged into all things Loop at loopchicago.com.
