Hyde Park's Cultural Calendar Is Overflowing This Week — And It's All Free (or Close to It)
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Hyde Park ·
Hyde Park neighbors, your weekend plans just got a serious upgrade. The neighborhood is bursting with fresh arts and culture events this week, with something on offer for virtually every taste — and most of it won't cost you a dime.
Kick things off Friday, April 17, when the Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th St.) hosts an opening reception for "Black Culture in Chicago," a photography exhibition curated by Dorian Sylvain featuring work by artists Mark Joseph and Ada Nivia López. The free reception runs 6–8 p.m. and promises to be a vibrant celebration of South Side artistry. Meanwhile, also on Friday, the Smart Museum of Art (5550 S. Greenwood Ave.) invites visitors to a free curator-led tour of "Composing Color: Paintings by Alma Thomas" at 1 p.m. — a rare chance to experience the late artist's stunning abstractions with expert insight. And theater lovers can catch Hyde Park Community Players performing Diana Son's "Stop Kiss" at University Church (5655 S. University Ave.) Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. for just $5. Then on Saturday, April 18, the University of Chicago's Rockefeller Memorial Chapel (5850 S. Woodlawn Ave.) transforms into a global stage for the Central Eurasian Music Festival, featuring throat-singing group Alash Ensemble and special guest Tuvergen Band from 6–8:30 p.m.
Looking a little further ahead, mark your summer calendars: the beloved 57th Street Art Fair — now in its 79th year — returns June 6–7 right here in Hyde Park, featuring nearly 200 artists. Hyde Park's creative spirit is showing up in a big way this spring.
