Dinosaurs, Discovery, and a Dream: $50 Million Scitopia Science Center Is Coming to Washington Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park just got a glimpse of its future — and it looks like labs, live animals, dinosaur fossils, and a whole lot of teenage curiosity. This week, neighbors and community supporters packed the University of Chicago Fossil Lab at 5437 S. Wabash Ave. for the public unveiling of Scitopia Chicago, a bold new $50 million science education center planned for a long-vacant lot right next to the Garfield Green Line station, near Garfield Boulevard and Prairie Avenue.
The brainchild of award-winning paleontologist and University of Chicago professor Paul Sereno — known for his "Indiana Jones" spirit of exploration — Scitopia is designed with South Side teens front and center. The two-story facility will feature dedicated biology, paleontology, and media labs, plus an "Imaginarium" workspace where young people can create, build, and explore. A major attraction called "Lost World" will bring living plants, animals, and West African dinosaur skeletons to life — including a model of SuperCroc, a prehistoric giant Sereno unearthed in the Sahara nearly three decades ago. There will also be a neighborhood museum celebrating Washington Park's deep contributions to 20th century jazz. Admission will be free, and the project already has the support of local aldermanic and community leadership. Construction is targeted for 2028, with an opening planned for 2029.
For neighbors who've watched that lot sit empty for years, Scitopia represents something powerful: a world-class destination being built specifically for this community. Stay connected with the Washington Park Advisory Council — which meets every third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. — and follow updates at scitopia.org to watch this vision become reality.
