Roll Call, West Pullman: Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby Is Bringing Its Skates — and Its Whole Community — to the Far South Side
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·
West Pullman is about to become the new home of full-contact, full-throttle excitement. The Chicago Knockouts, a beloved Chicago-area roller derby organization, has announced it is relocating to the Far South Side — and the neighborhood couldn't be a more fitting destination. The Knockouts have purchased a building in West Pullman and plan to transform it into a dedicated roller derby venue, christened simply "The Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby."
The move comes after four years of calling the Homewood Auditorium home, but with that facility slated for major performing arts renovations, the Knockouts went looking for a space they could truly call their own — and they found it right here. The West Pullman building, a former bowling alley, brings something extra special to the table: a coveted bank track, the kind that elevates both the sport and the spectator experience. "The bank track is larger than life. It gives a completely different crowd experience," said Ash Mateja, also known as the Crimson Vixen, one of the organization's skaters. The Knockouts field one youth league and two adult leagues, welcoming skaters of all genders and experience levels — with every participant encouraged to create their own derby name and individual style.
For West Pullman, landing a homegrown sports and entertainment anchor like the Chicago Knockouts is another sign that the neighborhood's momentum is undeniable. Keep an eye on the Knockouts' social channels for grand opening announcements, open skate sessions, and youth league sign-ups — West Pullman's newest arena is warming up its wheels.
