Hyde Park Parents and Business Owners Take to the Streets — and It Worked
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Hyde Park ·
Hyde Park's community spirit showed up in a big way last Tuesday evening, when a grassroots coalition of parents, residents, teachers, and local business owners organized a homegrown "parent takeover" on 53rd Street — and the neighborhood answered the call.
Leading the charge were philanthropist Early Walker and Trez Pugh III, founder and CEO of beloved South Side coffee shop Sip & Savor. The duo mobilized more than 100 parents to walk the neighborhood, greet young people, and model the kind of positive community presence they say Hyde Park is known for. "It takes a village to raise a child," Pugh and Walker said, invoking the spirit behind their effort. Kenwood Academy Principal Karen Calloway also joined the walk, reminding everyone that Hyde Park is an amazing area — and that keeping it that way is a shared responsibility. Longtime community organizer Bennie Currie, who launched the neighborhood watch initiative CollaBOOration several years ago, deployed about 45 team members across the area, staying connected and ready to respond.
By 10 p.m., there was no word of any problems — a quiet but meaningful victory for the neighborhood. Organizers say they hope this becomes a movement of its own. "This is the first of the effort, and we're hoping to do more of that because summer hasn't come yet," Currie said. Hyde Park's strength has always been its people — and Tuesday night proved it once again. Know a neighbor who showed up Tuesday? Give them a shoutout on Socialhood!
