Bronzeville Residents Rally for Power Equity as New Health Center Strengthens the Community's Foundation
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
Bronzeville is showing its community muscle on two fronts this week — and both stories are about neighbors demanding and building a better quality of life.
At Lake Meadows, about 3,000 residents — many of them seniors and children — have had enough of waiting. Backed by Bishop Larry Trotter, community members gathered to demand that ComEd follow through on long-promised electrical infrastructure upgrades for the nine-building complex. The outdated transformer system has left residents without reliable air conditioning for over two years, and a recent installation attempt triggered a seven-hour blackout. It's a powerful example of Bronzeville's organizing spirit: residents aren't just talking — they're showing up, speaking out, and holding utilities accountable ahead of another Chicago summer.
On a complementary note, health access in the neighborhood just got a meaningful boost. Near North Health has opened its new Bronzeville Family Center within the Oakwood Shores development at 3753 S. Cottage Grove, bringing primary care and community health services closer to home for South Side families. Together, these two developments reflect a Bronzeville that refuses to accept less: residents are fighting for the infrastructure they deserve while welcoming new institutions that invest in long-term community wellness. Stay tuned to both stories — and if you live at Lake Meadows, add your voice to the ComEd conversation.
