Pride in Stone and Purpose: A Puerto Rican Statue and a Health Training Hub Signal a Bold New Chapter for Humboldt Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
Big things are taking shape in Humboldt Park this week — and they speak directly to the neighborhood's dual commitment to cultural pride and economic opportunity. The Chicago Park District has proposed adding a statue of Pedro Albizu Campos, the iconic Puerto Rican independence leader, to the park itself. The proposal is framed as a way to give the community "a point of pride and a gathering spot" that reflects the neighborhood's deep Puerto Rican roots — a meaningful counterpoint to the park's existing tribute to German naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt. Neighbors can submit comments on the proposal online through April 30, and an online community discussion is scheduled for noon on April 30. An announcement on the final decision is expected in July.
Meanwhile, just a few blocks away on North Avenue, local organization ASI Health is pushing forward with updated plans for a brand-new five-story health and workforce training hub at 3446 W. North Ave. Designed by architecture firm UrbanWorks, the 20,000-square-foot building would replace a surface parking lot and include classrooms, multi-use conference spaces, and offices — all dedicated to expanding healthcare career pathways for West Side residents. A zoning application has now been formally submitted.
Together, these two developments paint a picture of a neighborhood investing in both its soul and its future. Make your voice heard on the Albizu Campos statue before April 30 — visit the 26th Ward office at aldermanfuentes.com for details.
