The Loop Is Becoming Chicago's Next Great Arts Destination — And It's Already Happening

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

If you thought The Loop was just a place to commute through, think again. A major cultural transformation is quietly — and not so quietly — taking root downtown, turning the neighborhood into one of Chicago's most exciting arts destinations this spring.

Earlier this year, the Chicago Loop Alliance unveiled plans for a bold new arts district, with nearly 90 Loop arts organizations joining forces to develop the neighborhood as a premier arts and culture destination. That vision is already becoming reality. The Chicago Loop Alliance also recently received an $800,000 two-year grant from the Department of Planning and Development to help fill vacant storefronts — in part by supporting small creative businesses — plus an additional

.1 million grant to expand its social service outreach program in the Central Business District. Meanwhile, at the Reid Murdoch Building (333 N. LaSalle), the boundary-pushing immersive experience "Theater of the Mind" — created by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and writer Mala Gaonkar — invites intimate groups of just 16 at a time through a 15,000-square-foot journey designed to challenge your senses and sense of self. It runs through July 12. Over at the Art Institute of Chicago, a stunning new Henri Matisse exhibition brings together rare cut-paper works the legendary artist created in the 1940s when he could no longer paint.

From boundary-pushing immersive theater to world-class fine art, The Loop's cultural calendar has never been richer. Head downtown this weekend and see what all the buzz is about — and stay up to date at loopchicago.com.
