One Graduate Student's Bold Vision: The Garfield Ridge 2050 Plan Could Transform the Southwest Side
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Garfield Ridge ·
Garfield Ridge has a passionate new voice shaping its future — and he's been a neighbor his entire life. Danny Villalobos, a 24-year-old University of Illinois Chicago urban planning graduate student, has authored what is believed to be the neighborhood's first-ever comprehensive community plan, aptly named Garfield Ridge 2050. His goal: give the Southwest Side a unified, resident-driven blueprint for growth and transformation over the next 25 years.
Villalobos didn't dream this up in isolation. Before putting pen to paper, he published a multilingual community survey that drew 216 responses from neighbors, and personally met with local business owners, neighborhood organizations, and alderpersons. His plan zeroes in on Archer Avenue, calling for it to evolve into a vibrant "main street" destination complete with walkable retail, transit-friendly infrastructure, and housing built above existing shops. He's already met with a city planner from Chicago's Department of Planning and Development and found strong alignment on the shared vision for the Southwest Side corridor.
Alderman Mike Rodríguez (22nd) praised Villalobos for engaging "working class people who don't normally engage in these processes" — and that grassroots spirit is exactly what makes Garfield Ridge 2050 so exciting.
